Through classical art, traditional proverbs, and superb research, this exquisitely designed volume takes a look back into the origins and history of these notorious shadow warriors.” Explore their traditions and guiding philosophy, their weapons and martial-arts skills, their mystique as stealthy black-clad assassins, and their enduring appeal as icons of popular culture. A timeline goes back beyond even the very first ninjalike figure, and follows the movement right through the 1800s, when the final ninja mission ever was recorded: the attempt to infiltrate Commodore Perry’s black ships” off Japan.

Enjoyable book for the young at heart. Nov 30, 2009
By Mark This was a fun, interesting and easy book to read. Almost every second page is a full-page picture and the line spacing is very generous so an adult reader could get through it in a single night (if they were reasonably committed). I read it over a weekend and took a strong interest in the more theoretical elements that were covered - including Ninja origins and the contemporary perception of Ninja. It had enough substance to hold my attention whilst also playing up to the more romantic idea's during the middle chapters (such as ninja weapons, strategy and missions). A comprehensive but light read that is certainly recommended to anyone with an endearing interest in the ninja. Four stars.

Great Introductory Ninja Book! Apr 04, 2010

If you love Ninja's then you'll LOOOOVE this book! I couldn't put it down from the moment I bought it! It's definately an introductory book, easy reading with alotta illustrations, but the reading content is surprisingly very informative & detailed; covering every aspect of the Ninja. From their orgins & history, to their weapons, techniques, tactics, traditions, guiding philosophies, up to their place in modern day popular culture. Aesthetically well put together, definately buy it if you like Ninja's, you won't be disappointed!

Fun addition to a Ninja fan library Dec 26, 2008

Nice young readers' book that introduces the historical context and describes the ninja main characters, philosophy, and techniques. Charming Japanese prints style and children books type illustrations complement the text well. Nice supplementary reading to graphic novel series like "Path of the Assassin".

By Benny Well, the book doesn't have a leather cover. It' just a print. I was really disappointed on that. And it looks awful. I thought it was going to feel like this old Japanese style book, with awesome illustrations and stuff. But the illustrations suck and every page is a print. And they used the same old paper texture on every page! And don't get me started on the typography... A designers worst nightmare. I still gave this book 4 stars because of it's content. It has some good ninja know/hows and awesome stories. Research was well done. So if you are a Ninja lover/fanatic, the book is a good source of information and I would recommend it. But remember, It's not going to look as awesome as you think.
A light read into the history of the ninja Dec 17, 2009

"so many books so little time"
I picked this book up as a gift for a relative and decided to give it a read before it disappeared into the all consuming black hole that is commonly known as a "teenager's room". I'm glad I did, this is a interesting light read on the history of the ninja. It covers from before the time of the first ninjas to the last recorded ninja mission in the 1800's. It's written in easy to understand language and does not get bogged down in the details of each section. Each section is pretty through on hitting the important parts of what it is covering and sometimes directing the reader to where they can get more information. If you are getting this for a child / teenager who is interested or may become interested in the subject there is a short bibliography in the back of the book for more information. On a side note it's not really a long book, half of the pages have a picture of some sort on them, usually showing what the opposite page is describing. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in the history of ninjas (child or adult) and to those looking for a place to start on learning about it. M.a.c
